The Ohio Bar works in tandem with our affiliate organizations to make a difference in the promotion of justice and advancement of the legal profession.
Our for-profit and nonprofit affiliates provide services and assistance to lawyers, judges, paralegals, teachers, law school students and high school students throughout Ohio. The Ohio Bar works closely with each affiliate's board and leadership to help them reach their respective goals.
Incorporated in 1978, the Ohio Bar formed the Ohio Bar Liability Insurance Company in response to an ongoing insurance crisis among Ohio attorneys. Commercial carriers had been withdrawing from the lawyer’s professional liability insurance market at the time, and prices for coverage were increasing rapidly.
The Ohio Bar created the Ohio Bar Insurance Agency to provide individual and group insurance products that meet the special needs of its members, their families and staff. With the strength of the largest professional legal association in Ohio behind it, the Ohio Bar Insurance Agency is able to negotiate with insurance carriers to develop insurance programs that meet the specific needs of our members.
As the charitable arm of the Ohio Bar, the Foundation is driven to promote the pursuit of justice and the public understanding of the rule of law.
Founded in 2019, Ohio Notary Services (ONS) is a unique partnership between the Ohio Bar and the Akron, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Dayton and Toledo bar associations, providing notary education and testing services in all areas of the state. In addition to helping notaries in meeting legal requirements to become a notary and renew their commissions, ONS is the only entity in Ohio certified by the Secretary of State to provide education and testing for notaries seeking to become online notaries.
The Ohio Center for Law-Related Education (OCLRE) provides Ohio’s students and teachers with exciting academic programs and resources, designed to engage students in learning about government, law and the importance of active citizenship. The Ohio Bar sponsors OCLRE, along with the Ohio Attorney General, the American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio Foundation and the Supreme Court of Ohio.
Legal Aid of Southeast and Central Ohio, formerly Ohio State Legal Services Association (OSLSA), was founded in 1966 by the Ohio State Bar Association. On January 1, 2024, OSLSA, which operated Southeastern Ohio Legal Services, merged with the Legal Aid Society of Columbus. The merged program now provides civil legal services in 36 Ohio counties.
The Ohio Lawyers Assistance Program (OLAP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping Ohio's judges, attorneys and law students obtain treatment for substance abuse, chemical dependency, addiction and mental health issues. Through OLAP, individuals receive confidential advice about such problems; help in arranging and implementing formal interventions; help in deciding between outpatient, inpatient and other treatment options; and monitoring and aftercare services.
The Ohio Bar proudly supports the Law and Leadership Institute – a statewide initiative that brings together Ohio's law schools, the Ohio Supreme Court and the state's legal community with the goal of preparing students from underserved communities for post-secondary and professional success.
The Ohio Access to Justice Foundation, founded in 1994, is a statewide, nonprofit organization committed to ensuring that civil legal aid is available to all low-income Ohioans. At its core, the Foundation funds lawyers who change lives.
