Step 1: Review Certification Requirements

View the Administrative Agency Law standards and Rule XIV of the Rules for the Government of the Bar for general information about specialty certification in Ohio.

Step 2: Complete and Submit Application

The Ohio Bar certifies specialists annually and applications are accepted from January through June every year. To apply:

Review the information and standards.
Begin the process by clicking the "Start Application Process" button below and log in with your Ohio Bar username and password.
Review the requirements and complete the application.

Step 3: Take Written Exam

The respective specialty board will review your completed application to determine eligibility to sit for the written examination, which will be administered on Nov. 17, 2025. The location will be announced at a later date. The examination is multiple-choice and you will have four hours to complete it. Additional information about the examination will be provided after your application is approved.
